Good Paul – Find (Finest Ego)

Find, the latest release from Polish producer Good Paul, provides a smooth serving of the many diverse styles present in electronic music. With notes of UK garage, house, hip hop, and downtempo, Good Paul manages to seamlessly craft an EP that touches on the many facets that make contemporary electronic music so appealing.

The opening song ‘Midnight With Tattoo Girl’ layers reversed samples with a deep, mellow bass line and reverbed percussion, drawing the listener into a complete state of immersion within the song. ‘Secret Story’ carries the downtempo aesthetic even further, with a whimsical synth line and pitched vocal samples perfectly complimenting each other and the relaxed vibe of the whole song.

The third track, ‘MClina’ marks a turning point in the sound of the EP, combining the more dance oriented elements of Good Paul’s production, a UK garage beat and heavily spaced bass that hints at strong Burial influences, with the far more relaxed qualities indicative of down tempo and hip hop.

The namesake track of the release, ‘Find’, moreover presents this blending of the two sounds present within Good Paul’s music. A sweeping bass line lies underneath a rather ethereal synth progression, cut through by a more rapid drum track, creating a much wider soundscape than that expected of the standard four minute composition.

The final song ‘Bouble Wouble’ marks a complete transformation onto the dance floor, with a fusion of house, garage and dubstep making it impossible to sit still whilst listening. Rapid fire samples, smacking drums, and, as the title suggests, wobbled synths, mark it as a true dance classic.

The diversity and progression of Find cannot be stressed enough, with it’s tracks fitting in equally as well in the headphones as they do on the dance floor, it highlights both Good Paul’s interests and influences as a producer, as well as the general trends in current electronic music.
