Om Unit – Transport (Civil Music)

Red Bull Academy graduate Jim Coles has had a big year transport being the last of three ep’s for 2011. ‘Transport’, four track vinyl, or 6 track download, fuses hard hitting dance floor construction with the elements of differing genres. Opening track ‘Swimming Dragon’ is a fast paced wobbling bass line with metallic slap beats and flute high in the mix. ‘An Eternal Way’ opens in classic rave style, chords, slow beat, signal drops and a fast skittering rhythm before launching into a syncopated fast beat over the top. ‘Vibrations’, again the slow beat and fast paced horn rhythm attack uses wide bass notes and the repetition of a sample, the tracks title, as the vocal element. ‘Cold World’ has the most distorted of contrasting elements, mashing the beats against each other, into a slightly dystopic feel, accentuating the strangeness created by this strategy. There are two remixes, Machinedrum attack ‘Vibrations’ into a faster paced rave friendly number with vocal stuttering and incessant fast drum accompanied with high tones and eventually a fast paced attacking wave beat pattern. Ital Tek lay in the bass and ethereal effects to ‘Swimming Dragon’ making sharp contrasts between the heavy bass patterns and high end chords, effects hollowed out in the middle, wafting specters in the mix.

It is specific music, for the dance floor, and can be place into the field of future bass music, which is possibly to say that it is the bastard child of rave, hard techno, drum and bass and elements of two step/dub step. Definitely a main floor dj tool for highly strung situations.
