Various Artists – Burning palms (Flaming Palms)

Sydney based artist Kate Carr has released an ambient compilation about a small beach in Sydney. A ‘home for black cockatoos, many palm trees and a natural figure eight rock pool’ which serves as a continuum for her labels namesake and direct David Lynch associations. Certainly there is a slight touch of Lynch psycho drama to the works, as there is to a great deal of immersive and environmental pieces as the nature of their interaction is dimensional and directly invokes spatial and interactive conscious attributes of the mind, technology and nature. Aptly it is mastered by Taylor Dupree of 12K who seems rather busy in the immersive ambient field.

There are tracks by Broken Chip, Savaran, Kate Carr, Sublamp, All N4tural, Manrico Montero, Adam WIlliams, Darren McClure, Every Bolt Rumbling. Standout tracks are ‘The sound of fish in a rock pool’ by Kate Carr which is very much the possible construction of water environments with added electronic effects, in very discrete patterns. ‘Antipodal Point’s by Adam Williams also incorporates environmental nature sounds, predominately the near surf on a beach to accompany it’s wavering drones and slight edge of beauty with the hint of darkness alluded in the presentation. Darren McClure’s ‘Figure 8’ is a more pristine environment of glitch and scratched effects with an almost classic hint towards a chimed scape in the redolent atmosphere hinted with aspects of sonic devotion. There is even the markedly out of place ‘Sunburn’ from Every Bolt Rumbling to finish of the compilation with a quick kick in the ear of markedly ferocious guitar, not quite strutting but definitely in your face which dissolves to a shadow overbuilt by some electronic drop mimicry and discrete electronic abstract art before exploding again and finishing off the hatchet job to the sense of ambience in any merely pleasant atmospheric sense of the word.

There is certainly variation compiled here by Carr and the quality of the works are fairly high. The unwillingness to deliver a cohesive theme besides the atmospheric sense of place with slight hints of menace luring around the edges of the ambience makes it an intriguing compilation. It is available free to download from at Flaming Palms, or by donation if this method suits your sense of responsibility.
