Reinhold Friedl – Eight Equidistant Pure Wave Oscillators, While Slipping Very Slowly To A Unison, Textually Spatialised On Eight Speakers, Concret, 60 Minutes (Room 40)

Reinhold Friedl is the maestro behind Zeitkratzer and responsible for some of that group’ most confounding sonics from his prepared piano, isolated brilliantly showcased on his recent 2CD set Inside Piano. Here he is reduced to eight oscillators and an adherence to strict mathematical process, creating a 60 minute drone in the Eliane Radigue / Phil Niblock mold.

There’ more activity in Friedl’ piece than in your standard Radigue or Niblock work, with the warm throb emanating from his oscillators creating a pleasant, enveloping experience. It’s interesting to follow Friedl’ actions as he causes subtle gradations in the hum and throb, tendrils sweeping and swerving about you, but better to forget the human component altogether and bask in the pure glow of electricity.
