Flatwound

Comprised of former Marcia Hines live collaborator Chris Soulos and ex-Good Buddha member Jack Prest, Sydney-based funk / disco / house duo Littlemore have already enjoyed local recognition, with this debut download-only single reaching the number two spot on Triple J’s ‘Unearthed’ dance chart. With the duo’s bio self-describing their musical approach as ‘bestriding the gorge between George Duke and Daft Punk’, the two tracks contained here offer up the first taste of their upcoming debut album ‘Super Space Dope Funk’, expected later this year. Title track ‘Littlemore’ sees Soulos and Prest fusing clattering hiphop drum breaks with swirling retro-disco string flourishes, thick live funk bass and clavinet keys, resulting in an infectious dancefloor-oriented offering that calls to mind the likes of Dr Rubberfunk and Mr. Scruff, particularly as it pares itself down to more streamlined house styles towards the end. By comparison, ‘Candy’ sees the duo dropping the tempo down to smooth midtempo drum rhythms, shimmering soul keys and whispering vocals for a more laidback and chilled ride that’s easily the former track’s polar opposite, in terms of mood. Not bad at all.
