A collaboration between Nick Thorburn (Islands, The Unicorns, Human Highway) and LA hip-hop producer Daddy Kev (Busdriver, Freestyle Fellowship, Awol One), introduced by avant-rapper Giovanni Marks (Subtitle). The two decided to release something very different, drawing from their disparate musical tastes and backgrounds; mixing darkly tinged pop sensibilities with smooth laid back beats and melodies, often conjuring images of Hawaiian beaches and tropical vistas, this release is treading new ground, you can’ lump this in with “indie hip-hop’, this is more song oriented. This mini album containing six tracks, a few interludes and two remixes, the mood is definitely mellow, but there is a darkness in the lyrics, in striking contrast to the soothing sounds that lull you into a false sense of security…
The two remixes surprise, topping off a neat mini-album. Dntel deliver their pop interpretation, sounding more like vintage Air with warm keys and vocoder vocals. The Flying Lotus remix is a beautifully soulful melody seemingly awash in space… Flying Lotus can seem to do no wrong, and shows his originality and diversity here, a beautiful interpretation.
