Studio – Yearbook 2 (Information/Inertia)

Intelligent pop music, who would have thunk it! Well obviously Studio (Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hägg) did and it truly is a corker, well due for the discerning floor jock to be spinning to all the cool kids. Obviously this is a compilation and the floor jocks are yawning at how slow this reviewers ears are, given they had probably had all the 12”s and rarities long ago.

The slow dubbed out chugging remake of Brown Piano (originally by Mountain of One), transforms these prog rockers into late night floor wanderings. Deceptively slow and complex hypnotic remake of Turn the Radio Off (Love is all). There are a few vocal numbers, Impossible, a version of Possible (Shout Out Louds), transformed into a kind of drum laden Balearic rhythmic dub monster and 2 Hearts (Kylie) remade in a restrained guitar/shaker/tambourine and heavy on the reverb/delay, minimal and restrained drums and wide on the obvious vocals. Slow compilation outro remake of Love on a Real Train (Williams) is a quiet delicate number that showcases Studio’ production talents, clean crisp and multifaceted maintaining a distinct sound while introducing and morphing key elements to the foreground.

Given that Studio’ sound is full of hybrid form, comparisons are rife and most likely meaningless. Their ability to utilise differing form and create a sound tableau distinctly their own is the particular stamp of the dj/remixer. Suffice to say that this is not a definitive document in music’ hall of fame but is an excellent tool for the journeyman dj. Not something to be scoffed at, pay the bills, keep the kids dancing and laugh at high art with a pocket full of dosh. It’s not quite a golden calf but it will work in the club.
