Cloudland Canyon – Lie in Light (Kranky/Inertia)

Channeling the very essence of Can and Neu!, Cloudland Canyon don’ simply “refer’ to the forebarers of Kraut-rock, they exchange identities. This, their second album is an impressive set of occasionally wild, sonically burgeoning tunes which threaten to rise tsunami-like, but instead condense the driving rhythms and surging frequencies of the genre with billowing psychedelic washes and bi-lingual verse. The duo take considerable liberty from time-to-time, and they also forge some new sonic terrain through the psych-tinged ‘Lie In Light’s and ‘White Woman’, with its beautiful tirade of feedback and distortion against a foreground of noodly synths and bass and inciting vocal licks. A fine midpoint between restraint and well, none, melody and Spaceman-inspired “poetry’, Lie In Light burns low but reeks of bright sparks.
