Zeal – Salt (promo-single) (Zealousy)

Ahh…pop music the way it should be. Memorable melodies, harmonies, adventurous production, glockenspiel. This promo-release contains a couple of tracks from Adelaide based Zeal’s upcoming EP, This Is How I Hear Your Voice, along with a remix of one of those tracks, ‘Yumi and the Sky’, by Melbourne’s Faux Pas. It’s subtle stuff, very much in the bedroom electronica mode with small sounds, both acoustic and electronic, bouncing in and out of the mix in a kaleidoscopic manner. ‘Your words in my head/sing me to safety’ could be used to describe the mood of all the tracks. There’s definitely an everpresent warm, pleasant glow, with the slightly off-kilter vocals adding a kind of indie humanness. The Faux Pas remix won’t be part of the EP, but is currently being played on Fbi, JJJ, RRR etc and actually sounds like a whole new song until the familiar chorus melody kicks in, testament to the sympathy and creativity used to rework the song. On this basis, the EP is sounding like it could be quite worthwhile.
