Fluorescent Grey – Lying on the floor with god in a Tijuana motel room next door to a veterinary supply store (Isolate Records)

Not shy on the descriptive titling, Californian Fluorescent Grey creates dense experimental electro acoustic electronica. There’ a very loose sense of cohesion flowing through his constructions in which he seems to enjoy suggesting the possibility of noisy chaos yet living on the edge barely maintaining order. His music is like a speeding car, just when you think he may loose it, he turns the corner and demonstrates that he was in control all along. His techniques are fascinating and highly experimental. For example the track: ‘I am a photograph of my old driveway, the edges of the photograph are made of cartoon cows’ teeth, as the cow’s mouth closes I explode into a firework cloud of red and green dog biscuits, was made up of music composed in a sequencer and then played out of a boom box in 30 different locations, which were then edited and arranged together to reform the song. So it’s not just complex song titles, there are also complex techniques at play. It’s freaked out and dexterous, feeling like everything’ been thrown in including the kitchen sink, there are vague scattered moments of breakbeat, freaked out IDM, minimal frenzies. It feels precocious like anything can and probably will happen. There’ so much energy here. But then when you think you have him pegged he pulls out a cool electronic groove that was constructed apparently via spectral analysis morphing drums in pianos and barking puppies into rock showers and chirping bird into a dolphin. Huh? Lets just say the results sound very strange, highly processed but goddamn funky in an off kilter, hope I don’ lose my lunch kind of way. There’ so many ideas bouncing around in here it’s overwhelming, the beats are loose, and genre is up to interpretation and liable to change at a moments notice.
