Various Artists – Huge Pavillions (Phthalo Records)

While Phthalo’s press bio describes the Pavillions Collective as being “a mysterious, heretofore little known rave scene from somewhere deep in the former Eastern Bloc’, a swift bit of web research and scoping of Myspace pages reveals they’re in fact Miro and Robert Merlak, two brothers originally from Croatia, but now London-based. This teeth-rattling 34 track, 72 minute mix sees the Merlak brothers paying tribute to classic early rave in the vein of Djax Up Beats and Ferox, with a unrelenting flow of acid-infused headpounding technoid rhythms laid down. Throughout tracks are unpredictably crashed into one another amidst rapid, neck-snapping spinbacks, evoking a sensation somewhere between the furious mix aesthetic of Jeff Mills / DJ T-1000 and the low attention span jump-cuts of classic Rotterdam hardcore. From the outset until the very end, there’s not really much in the way of respite here, which means the headstrong are likely to hold tight and enjoy the boneshaking ride, while the more fainthearted may be advised to keep a safe distance. Fans of the likes of Rephlex, UR and Universal Indicator’s more furious moments will no doubt lap this up.
