Various Artists – It’s Over, We Don’ Care (Spanish Magic)

This is a great taste of what’s lying under the surface, of some of the more unique, experimental and slightly brain damaged sonic exponents that Australia has to offer. So it’s kind’ve comforting that it begins with Melbourne’ Hi God People, one of the most bizarre and entertaining live outfits around who think up a new concept each time they play. Their piece is a tinkering rickety stomping groove that seems effortless. Sydney based Pimmon reaches in and fiddles with the innards of his laptop, ii take a stab at wistful post rock, and brothers of the occult sisterhood turn in the musical equivalent of a creepy rusty gate with some innocent finger picking over ominous groans. And that’s just the first four tracks. Later on North Atlantic loop guitar and electronics, seasoned improvisers Anthony Guerra and Peter Blamey get a six minute drone feedback thing happening whilst rand and Holland try to repair our broken hearts (or perhaps break our hearts) with Shanghai Lady.
