Following on from Koji Asano’ release ‘The Giant Squid Collection Vol 1 : 1997-1998’, ‘Final Insurance’ exhibits a more fully realised idea. Asano has remastered all the tracks because the source recordings were from cassette tape and open reel. He calls these his “early stage’ – tracks that were composed before his first release, “Solstice†in 1995.
I enjoy the sheer diversity of Asano’ output. He takes everything from guitars, pianos, and synthesizers but maintains a consistent style. Scratching and grating tones mesh with field recordings and fm static. “Final Insurance†is an important picture of Koji Asano’ artistic origins and is as good a place as any to enter his sound world.
