Vorpal – An Incomplete Guide To Vorpal Music (Cock Rock Disco)

0

It’s Pittsburgh based Vorpal’ debut release, an intriguing dilapidated vaguely playful sounding break beat effort crafted on an old pc and outdated versions of Reason and Acid. And in this techno fetishist world it is something that should be celebrated. Vorpal has excused himself in the technological arms race and pursued his own unique vision. What is immediately likeable about his music is his refusal to totally surrender himself to the frenzied chaos of break beat, instead opting for a more experimental idiosyncratic approach, with strange quite languid moments of looped soundscapes existing alongside the warm lo fi sounding breaks. Perhaps it’s due to deficiencies in his soundcard or it may be intentional (I’d like to think it’s both) but Vorpal has a very distinctive sound, a dry somehow quite antique feel, that even when it becomes quite chaotic never feels aggressive. Though the real interest is his quite clever constructions, which evolve through multiple incarnations. He even quite boldly samples the likes of Erik Satie and J.S. Bach, drawing them both into the strange and wonderful world of Vorpal.
