“The Helical Word’ is a journey into dark ambience. For his second self-released work, Brandon Nickell, a 23 year-old Oakland, California resident, utilises a range of synthesis techniques to create his source sounds. On this release he avoids using any external sounds, having generated everything from the ground up.
From the first track, “Walking Along Edges’ the listener is drawn into a chaotic tonal universe. The record centres around “Qaddah’, a 12 minute opus. However, I came away feeling a lack of coherence. No matter how many times I listened to this record (and enjoyed it) I still felt that Nickell should have worked on the flow between tracks and sounds. Aemae is one to watch – the filmic quality of his works is apparent – but the works need a little more time to percolate before being heard.
