Dr Dooom 2

Kool Keith from Ultramagnetic Mcs fame brings the Dooom back with Kutmasta Kurt for Dr Dooom 2. Keith is so on point lyrically with this album, he unique sense of perverted humor, hitting home after the “unofficial’ resurrection of Dr Octagon by his record company, something Kool Keith has distanced himself from, and with this release has finally put Dr Octagon to rest, and if you don’ believe me, listen to RIP Dr Octagon for proof.

Kool Keith has been prolific, but he always seems to deliver quality, and in today’ age of bland hip-hop posers and pretenders, this album serves up fifteen tracks of futuristic beats, and perverse mind numbing raps. The production is sharp, oozing a sinister cinematic quality that’s just not found in commercial hip-hop. Happy to let the teamwork of Kutmasta Kurt and Kool Keith shine through, there are few guests and collaborators, the pair obviously working well together, as shown in other projects they’ve done, Diesel Truckers and Masters Of Illusion, the later also featuring Motion Man, who makes an appearance here on Surgery. TomC3 from the Polaroid Project collaboration with Keith, produces one track, The God Of Rap, giving us a more straight up hip-hop track with head nodding beats and simple string loop.

This album instills faith that hip-hop as a relevant genre can still be progressive, experimental and poignant. Kool Keith still delivers lyrically, with a brash bombast, sharp as a scalpel tongue, and humor that in my opinion is sorely missed from most music today. I think as long as Keith can utter a verse or two, it’ll keep me coming back for more.
