Brownswood Bubblers Three

Gilles Peterson, a well respected radio DJ, for both KISS FM and the BBC’ Radio 1, has put together another installment in the Brownswood Bubblers series, and as usual, it covers a wide spectrum of sounds from dub and reggae through jazz, nu-jazz, funk, soul, r’n’b, broken beat, hip-hop and everything in between.

Kicking off with Bullion, an act to watch, with similarities with acts such as Flying Lotus, low slung, skewed hip-hop, with generous lashings of bass and synth. Joey Negro delivers a fine slice of neo-soul, while Katalyst deliver their take on soul, featuring the fine voice of Steve Spacek, sounding like a Motown classic. Moving onto a more nu-jazz feel for DJ Day and some mellow latin from Jukes, returning to some low slung hip-hop from Stacy Epps with her soulful r’n’b stylings. You’d expect a large contingent of Jazz in any of Peterson’ compilations, and he doesn’ disappoint here, with cuts from Rozzi Dame, Yaw, Emanative, The Invisibles and Arun Ghosh. Rounding out the album with mellow soul and the spoken word from Charlie Dark & Roger Robinson, a beautiful track, and a latin dub tune from Keneth Bager.

There’ always something for everyone on any compilation from Gilles Peterson, whether it be on Brownswood, Acid Jazz, or Talkin’ Loud, a perfect companion to the coming summer Sunday afternoons.
