Various Artists – More MPM Sound (Melting Pot/Creative Vibes)

OK, here we go again, another bunch of white boys exploring the Euro take on funk joints that seem to be so de riguer these days. Never fails to bore the absolute pants off me, even at the slightest glance.

But hello…what’s this?

One track in and we’ve got a truly original dirty groove going on. A cover of the classic Bambaata tune “Planet Rock” no less…surely riding for a fall. No! It really hits the mark in a modern/slash vintage funk mode. This comp is off to a great start – best I put all predjudice aside and listen some more. Second tune is a smooth groove from DJ Day that equals any of the heyday joints on Grand Central’s early releases (the label, quality and period that reminds me of the sounds going on here). The third track sampling 60’s sunshine pop outfit The Cyrke by DJ Adlib features Stones Throw cousin Medaphoar is an indicative showing of this great compilation of retro/future funk that pleases on all levels.

As a DJ staple, this cd put together by DJ Olski for Groove Attack (home to Declaime, Bahamadia and many more) will provide an escape in any bad situation, and as a party starter it provides the atmosphere of sophisticated fun and coolness that any honest “happening” requires. Sure, I’m rambling, but it really is great.

Put your po-faced asumptions aside of what makes for a fun and funky listening experience in 2007 and get wise to Devil McDoom, Hawkeye, Imperial Breed and especially Lefties Soul Connection, whose live cover of Josh Davis’s “Organ Donor” almost surpasses the original. No slouch, all fun.

Get busy one time.
