Kawabato Makato & the Mothers of Invasion – Hot Rattlesnakes (Prophase/ MRA)

What could be better than a bunch of acid eating stoner Japanese hippies wailing away on their guitars and feedback in long repetitive tripped out jams that seem to last forever? This is a reissue of an out of print side project from Japanese freak out legends Acid Mothers Temple crafting their unique brand of free folk sonic overload, as they worship on the alter of sonic excess, abusing and tearing at their guitars in a sustained frenzy – or is that a sustained orgy, of sonic chaos. With just bass, drums and a bunch of guitars this trio effortlessly and perhaps not unexpectedly gradually conjured up a wall of seething hypnotic noise, which they have then manipulated over time before launching into a sustained endorphin fuelled crescendo. And that’s just the first track ‘Theme of Hot Rattlesnakes.’ Their second, ‘Fripian Flipped Over Nifty Their King of Frippery,’ which although referencing Robert Fripp’ characteristic guitar webs is somewhat more grounded, remaining dynamically consistent with highly repetitive riffing. The last piece begins with some strange low-key improvisation but then erupts into a sustained frenzied freakout. This is music for those hooked on the adrenalin, for those who like to hear the guitar pushed beyond simple riffing, protesting into a terrified squeal.
