Kid 606 – Pretty Girls Make Raves (Tigerbeat6/Stomp)

San Diego’s Miguel Depedro usually comes across as a restless child, so it’s no suprise he’s made another leap with the punningly titled ‘Pretty Girls Make Raves’. Instead of happy-hardcore-it’-okay-to-like or beautifully understated electronic music or mash-ups or jungle/breakcore, this time Depedro’ in the vault at Tresor. And it’s great. Pretty Girls picks up where Green Velvet should have left off, with noisy techno that has this writer itching to strap on some trainers and head out to one of those unbridled techno warehouse parties with a huge crowd and a sound system whose power is measured in very large numbers. Aside from Oakland Highsiding, the wind-up at the end (doesn’ every rave need one), this is all about brutal jacking techno, dense layered production and distorted punk vocals. To be honest, it’s not far from recent DFA remixes, but these tracks are hedonistic in a way those het up New Yorkers can’ manage. This is closer to the Prodigy at their stupid party rocking best, back before Liam Howlett turned into Axl Rose.
