The Rough Guide to the music of Tanzania (World Music Network/MRA)

0

The Rough Guide to the music of Tanzania provides a rare window into the sounds of this East African country not previously known in the West for its music. Yet this cd suggests a vibrant scene, everything from hip hop led by urbanized Maasai’ rapping in Swahili, to orchestral ensembles like Ikhwani Safari Musical club that celebrated 100 years of existence last year. Perhaps the most famous music is taarab, descended from Islamic roots it’s more folk orientated, commonly sung at weddings. Much of the music is dance orientated with a deep groove, though this collection is quite diverse, covering a lot of ground and presenting some unique and beautiful tunes.
