This four track CD EP on UK imprint Rednetic represents the debut offering from London-based drum & bass producer Scorn-Fury, who describes himself as interested in music with an “experimental edge’, and also runs his own Darknoid label. Unfortunately, much of the material featured on “Invaders’ sits somewhat awkwardly between “listening’ electronics and dancefloor DNB, with the lack of significant development and variation over the lengthy tracks proving to be the biggest obstacle here. “Dark Cults Of Evil’ begins promisingly with bright 8-bit sounding synths tracing a pattern over minimal electro rhythms and foreboding bass tones, but fails to really throw in any surprises, resulting in a lack of payoff for the listener, a factor that recurs throughout many of the tracks here. The title track’s fusion of spooky seventies TV samples and hardstep DNB clearly shows Scorn-Fury has his junglist skills nailed down, but the fact that the same bar repeats from start to finish relegates it to the status of DJ tool more than anything else. While there are certainly inspired ideas amongst the four tracks here, there’s an abiding sense that a little more variation would have resulted in a more rewarding listen.
