Urdog – Garden of Bones (Secret Eye/Sensory Projects)

Garden of Bones feels like it fell from the sky. It’s only when you listen to something like this that falls well outside current musical trends that you start to appreciate how homogenous music has really become, how our ears have been horribly enslaved without our knowledge. And Urdog’ originality can free us from that straight jacket. They are strange folks who don’ really fit as rockers or experimentalists, proudly existing in their own bastardised space somewhere in between. There’ a raw sloppy almost improvised energy to their music that admittedly with a long bow seen through LSD coloured glasses could draw comparisons to Can or Pink Floyd’ late 60′ psychedelia but without the terrible hippie vocals. With tribal pulsing energetic rhythms they conjure up this overwhelming wave of energy, though it’s the Farfisa that really cements Urdog in a world of their own. Organ is usually used to suave, smooth funked up effect, though Urdog clearly haven’ read the manual and feature some of the strangest illest Farfisa action I’ve ever encountered. The player is either a genius or slightly retarded, probably a mixture of both; though regardless the work is nothing short of incredible. Garden of Bones features strange stirring spoken word, folkish melodic flourishes, tripped out space jams, very strange Farfsia solos, and the odd songs with cryptic lyrics and strange allusions. The three piece are from Providence Rhode Island and not outer space as I had suspected, but nonetheless their music is incredible and affirming both sonically and due to the fact that there are finally some folks out there pursuing their own unique visions.
