Carrie – Honey Blue Star (Static Discos)

I normally pay very little attention to press releases and certainly take more than a spoon-ful of salt with the number of adjectives they throw around to gush about a particular release. So I was a little dubious when I read about Honey Blue Star, the debut release from Mexican solo folk-electronic artist, Carrie, known to her family and friends as Laura Becerra. They promised me everything and I was more than a tad surprised to discover the album was actually everything the press release promises and more. It is a lovely combination of warm electronic folk, filled with dreamy tones and sophisticated twee. Written and performed by Carrie, produced by Ruben Tamayo (Fax) and mastered by Fernando Corona (Murcof) this is one of those records to put on when you’re trying to impress that really twee-loving indie kid, or that very serious, chin stroking electronic music nerd. It’s a little bit pop, but in a way that just brings smiles and approval from every camp. It’s happy, yet allowing the listener to be reflective too, there are a good combination of lovely guitar melodies, electronic clicks, chilled beats, good grooves and sweet vocals. To nod to that release sheet, yes it’s true there is a childlike wonder, teamed perfectly with an irresistible charm and good humour. It’s a little Hope Sandoval a little Lali Puna and a little pop. It’s an enchanted summer afternoon under a tree, it’s a beautiful winter’ night by the fire, it’s the sweetness and gentle excitement of spring, and the beauty and crispness of autumn. This is an album all seasons, all times of day, enjoy it in its entirety or include some tunes on your favourite mixtape. (Or mp3 playlist for the new skool amongst you.) Any which way you listen to it, it’s a charming and captivating release from a talented lady to keep your ears out for in the future.
