Simo Soo

Sydney-based producer, DJ and visual artist Simo Soo has been musically active since his teens, logging time in a number of bands including Spudgun and Pikelet before going on to pursue a solo electronic direction that’s seen him perform in predominantly DIY venues both here and abroad. He’s also previously released a number of EPs and mixtapes, both as downloads and through his own Lesstalk Records label. Packing in five tracks over just 12 minutes of running length, at times there’s almost an ADD-esque feel to this latest download only EP as it rapidly snaps between ideas and styles.

‘Ultimate Form’ kicks proceedings off with a juddering dubstep-tinged wander through queasy, cheap-sounding synth warbles and bass buzzes, as repetitive metallic tones interlock against jarring melodic stabs, before ‘On Top’ sees sampled female yells getting cut up against furious footwork snares before the entire track gets sliced and stuttered all over the place before rapidly cutting out. Chopped and screwed offering ‘Sich Beat’s meanwhile gets cold and relentlessly mechanical and swaggering hip hop beats get crushed down to a bassy crawl against icy bleeping synths, fluttering snare rolls and aquatic-sounding electronic burbles, before ‘666’ takes things out with what’s easily this EP’s smoothest moment, as a teasing pop vocal loop circles against an almost Orb-esque backdrop of rolling bass and gliding electro drum machine rhythms. Unpredictable stuff that’s well worth checking out – you can get ‘GR8ZZZZZTTT’ as a name your price download from http://simosoo.bandcamp.com/
