Bjössi Biogen was one of Iceland’s pioneers bringing hardcore breakbeat to the island nation in early 1990s before decades of prolific and diverse production across pretty much every electronic sub-genre. From ambient sketches to breakcore to splintered techno, his pioneering sounds are increasingly being heard by new ears, thanks to his friends unearthing his vast catalogue of unpublished DATs following his death in 2011.
After hearing his music when touring Iceland, Nina Kraviz has assembled a fantastic collection of Biogen’s tracks for her трип label courtesy of fellow Icelander, Ruxpin.
Here on 160 Techno there are glimpses of Frankfurt/Cologne hardcore techno circa 1993 – which for those of us old enough to remember – should conjure up the smells and sweats of crumbling warehouse squat parties.
Halogen Continues is out on June 23.
