Listen to “Laugh and Dance” from the whacked out funky weirdness that is Starship Commander Wooooo Wooooo

0

Originally released in 1979 this is a rare private press electronic funk LP than needs to be heard to be believed.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Omer Coleman Jr was a DJ in the late 1970’s and ran a Mobile Disco business that took him across the country, hosting parties. After a trip to California, he came back to Kansas City inspired to dress up as Commander Wooooo Wooooo.

Coleman played every instrument on the album, wrote and produced all of the songs, performing in an alien voice that comes not from electronic fx but from his own natural vocal distortions. He had explosions, fog, flashing lights and ridiculous outfits, even a space age electronic car. In later years he would go on to Gillette radio advertisements, gospel rap music, and creating the Omer awards for overlooked local talent.

It’s been re released on Melbourne leftfield label Left Ear Records. You can find more information here.
