Musicologist nerd alert! The London Sinfonietta has released an app based around Steve Reich‘s seminal 1972 work, Clapping Music.
The free app promises to “improve your rhythm” as the player taps in time with the shifting ostinati that unravel throughout the piece. And in what must be the Art music equivalent of ‘The Voice’, the top score gets to play with the Sinfonietta.
Other features, which for me were more interesting than the game itself, include notes and video interviews with Reich, an excellent analysis of Electric Counterpoint and links to a research project.
Unfortunately for Android users, “Steve Reich’s Clapping Music” is only available for iOS devices, but I suspect this is due to Apple’s faster audio latency.
The London Sinfonietta employed Touchpress – the folks who collaborated on Bjork‘s awesome Biophilia app – to create the app which is beautifully rendered.
