Haroon Mirza

Haroon Mirza is an English conceptual artist whose work often deals with video, audio, image and test. Often the audio work centers around conceptual audio installations. While the aspects of practice are one thing, the often references to the act of production, the form of production and the history and social context of production of art are concerns often canvassed by his work. All that being said there is a little bit of dada, of the surreal, within his work, however you would like to encapsulate that in these times. o/o/o/o/ is a 12″ release which combines the talents of Mizra with Mo’ Wax label head, Dj and electronic musician James Lavelle.

The result centers on a Japanese inspired melody, played out in a simple loop manner, a chugging beat, variable harmonic chords in the background and a euphoric break that sets up the emotive sense of the track. In terms of eliciting the emotion of joy, this pair have nailed the concept. Beyond that it is great production, specifically in the use of spatial positioning of sound in combination with melody, the tracks are loud and well mastered. The combination of simple parts sparsely, yet intelligently arranged is a real audio treat. It certainly is so far away from the chaos of Lavelle’s early days with Mo’ Wax, less chaos but greater imparting of what is learnt through time well spent.
