Eyes are Blind is the title of DJ Red’ latest offering as well as the name of the opening track. It has a bold, rhythmic beginning and eschews the more traditional technique of a slow build-up. The song is sonically full from the outset and leads me to question where the track can possibly go from here. The answer comes soon after with the entrance of a pulsating, filtered 808 kick and ghostly vocal murmurs pushing and pulling amongst a sea of synth noise that deepens and moves through the sonic landscape. Simona Calvani or DJ Red, the moniker that this fiery-locked Roman performs and produces under, has been a mainstay of the European techno scene since 1997. She has been resident DJ at Goa, a Berlin techno nightclub for a number of years and has performed with many stalwarts of the genre in her time. Persistent, shuffling hi-hats and dark, cavernous synths form the focus of “Look Deep’ the second track on the EP. Simple yet seductive, the title and the music itself urges the listener to find an inner calm and focus on the minimal, trance-inducing combination of sounds. “Awake Track’ is spacious and sonically very smooth in the high end and one criticism would be that the song always seems to be on the verge of taking off but never quite gets there. Despite this, each time I play the songs through, I find myself losing track of time.
