Spring EP

Feral Media completes the seasonal themed year with the release of the Spring EP comprising four tracks by Tim Shiel, Pimmon (Paul Gough), Nakagin (Hugh Luscombe) and Nimble Animal (Dominic Stephens). I am unsure how the artists exactly came by their representations, or how the themes are exactly inspired and it may be as opaque to you as well. However the first track, Tim Shiel’ General Practice is described as “pastoral folktronica’ which is a bit astray, it certainly is quite ambient and starts with a quiet acoustic guitar moment before layering on drones and effects, bits of static and differing elements introduced and abandoned while the central progression moves on.

Pimmon’ Ytterbium has a two layered approach with a constant barrage of looped electronic beat like scraps stuttered at an alarming rate at the listener while the beatific drones while their way in the background. I bet the drones symbolise the spring bit, perhaps the stuttering is the emotional confusion that the season may bring to some. Who’ to tell? Nakagin’ Bloom just goes straight for the minimal ambient template of the sensuous variety, slow slap beat and a few tone variations providing enough of a palette for a little gem. Nimble Animal’ Time Scraper is of a different style, spoken word over bubbling electronics with a slow stab beat and there is a dark menace both to the nuance of the lyrics and the presentation of the music. Spring obviously ends for Feral Media in a bit of a dark place.
