MssingNo

Dark, minimal and catchy as hell, this debut EP from London producer MssingNo marks the second vinyl release from Leeds-based label Goon Club Allstars. Describing their musical output so far as “club-focused”, this EP is definitely a good step in that direction and is sure to build some serious recognition and respect for these newcomers. ‘XE2’ is the first cut off the EP and has already garnered praise from the likes of Pitchfork and Fact Magazine. Playfully twisting and shaping vocals from R Kelly and Bow Wow’s track ‘I’m A Flirt’, the melodies sound elastic in how smoothly they roll into each other making creative use of the a cappella from which the vocal material has been gleaned. MssingNo offers a fresh take on instrumental grime incorporating elements of trance and R&B, a fusion that is far more effective than one might expect. Thick clashing square waves form the tracks Reese bassline that undulates throughout as bells punctuate the pulsating synthscape. The use of these melodic bell sounds as a rhythmic element works really well, interplaying with the three major vocal samples to create an icy, dissonant yet irresistible combination. Skittering drums take a backseat to the killer vocal hooks that do just that, worming their way into my head after just two listens and remaining there ever since.

Opening track ‘Skeezers’ is playful, sexy and has some delicious low end action. I dare you to listen to this without wanting to shake it all over the place. This cut flows smoothly into the synth-heavy ‘XE3’ conjuring images of a colourful sunrise appearing on the journey home after a big night out. ‘124th’ is tough and heavy in contrast, still maintaining the rich array of textures that we can expect from Mssingno, with a more sinister twist this time round. Keep your eye on this one.
