Various Artists – Uncomfortable Beats: Trinity (Uncomfortable Beats)

Uncomfortable Beats: Trinity, the third compilation released by Melbourne based label Uncomfortable Beats, presents eight stunning tracks from an array of underground and up and coming Australian producers. Following the likes of the Free The Beats series of compilations, Uncomfortable Beats: Trinity covers a plethora of electronic music genres, sub-genres and everything else in between.

Master of Ribongia takes hold of the opening track ‘Antimatter’ with a certain wonkiness that has come to be expected from Australian beat compilations. With a grinding synth line resting a top an organic, albeit jagged, drum track, it definitely is a rather interesting start to a promising compilation.

Boss Mode brings in the oriental vibes with ‘Get Shwilly’, twisting a Chinese lead sample into one of the smoothest and most nod-worthy beats that has blessed my ears in a long time. The seamless interpretation of the same melody into a synth line near the latter end of the song highlights both his creativity and maturity as a producer.

One of the only names I previously recognised on the compilation, that of Rachel Haircut, brings a tune much different than the duos previous Soundcloud outputs and mixes. Presenting much more of a harsh and abrasive beat, dropping into luscious footwork rhythms halfway through, also incorporating aspects of hit genre of the day, the infamous trap, ‘Flower Clap’ is definitely a powerhouse of a genre-crossing tune.

The second last track on the compilation, Kit Pop’s ‘Clouded’, is a soft and sweeping atmospheric beat, marked by its repetitive yet evolving composition. With its title perhaps being an allusion to a hit Internet genre of the past years, that of cloud rap, it sits well at the end of the release, softly easing out after the rather full on aesthetic of the compilation as a whole.

The diversity of talent on the compilations shines through the eight tracks, offering an interesting and captivating release for appreciators of quality Australian electronic music.
