Jeremiah Jae – Raw Money Raps (Brainfeeder)

Raw Money Raps, the debut release from LA producer/MC Jeremiah Jae on Flying Lotus’ own Brainfeeder label, is an exploration of the more unique and thought provoking sides of both beat making and hip hop lyricism. Having previously released mixtapes and EPs, Raw Money Raps is an explosive debut full length for Jeremiah Jae, and one sure to turn heads in both electronic music and hip-hop circles.

Jeremiah Jae’s production is overall rather jagged and gritty, at times dropping into a smooth groove before shifting back into often abrasive yet incredibly interesting rhythms. The second track ‘Guns Go Off’ is a perfect example of this, beginning with a tightly repeated drum pattern, it maintains its rapid sound for a steady three minutes before an abrupt end.

‘Greeting (feat. Tre)’ begins in a similar fashion to the previous, however as the verse begins the song falls into a smooth flow, marked by sampled drums and a dancing bassline and excellently complemented by the lush rhymes of Tre.

The influence of the forever king of beats, J Dilla, is particularly prevalent in ‘Cat Fight’. With a wonderful slowed down soul sample providing the beef of the track, it fits in perfectly with the sound of the whole album, whilst providing a brief moment of relief from the at times grating sounds put forth by some of the other tracks.

‘Guerilla (Evolution Part 1)’ the longest track on the album at close to five minutes, moves through phrases and suites, sounding more like a collection of samples rather than a single song. Opening up with the one sided voice of Jeremiah on a phone call resting over a mid century movie sound track, it soon drops out to just the voice right before an incredible drugged out beat comes in to round out the track.

Raw Money Raps, while not being an album for the surface fan of hip-hop, will definitely go to please those who aren’t afraid of widening their previously held perception of such a popular genre.
