Now this is a tasty little 7″ record. Didn’ know what to expect apart from the title The Dub Lab, Part 1 & 2, plus the jukebox style centre hole, so it’s a dub 7â€â€¦ Now I like my dub, whether that be straight from Jamaica, or straight up experimental, and this is a fine slice of the later. Reminding me of the too few 7†releases on the Bomb Mitte label, this is raw, stripped back, downright dirty dub. The drums are interesting, unsure whether to be dub skank, hip-hop sludge or dubstep breakdown, delivering something very different, the drums sounding live, giving a loose feel, coming across like Malcom Catto on valium. Overlaid with minimal electronics and the usual dose of dub effects, this is a real head nodder. Usually this Russian serves up breakcore, so this is a welcome departure.
To quote the press release, “these are club bangers for the undead. This is the soundtrack to your pilgrimage from the dusty, burnt out remains of civilization.†Indeed, watch out for those zombies…
