Various Artists – The Painfree Found Sound Institute Volumes 1 & 2 (Drop Name Records)

0

Greeted by a color cut’n’paste (hand-cut actually!) extravaganza of the usual break-core ‘put popular culture through a bad mushroom trip’ visual style, the cover art of this two disc set by an artist known only as ‘ultra cheesy font’s sets the tone for this mammoth collection of fractured breaks, sampladelic booty-core and just plain audio nastiness. On the label ‘The Painfree Found Sound Institute’ or PFFS for short it features tracks from well known Oz breakcore stalwarts Fraughman, Toecutter, Maladroit and Passenger of Shit as well a list of other artists too long to mention. With a crazy 37 tracks across two discs, the only discernible theme for this record is ‘fucking shit up’ really. The mash-up/remix sound has really infiltrated the breakcore sound in a lot of artists on this disc as breakcore traverses the globe and gains a wider audience. Toecutter’s Drop the Facade, kills it in his usual cut-up, hard-nrg style beats; mass-commerce techno interspersed with news and political quotes, glitches and rewinds. Xian’s Untitled is a complex juggle of beats, understated pop sampling, with a driving-lagging glitch rhythm, Wheelsfalloff’s Door Bitch is a meticulously constructed comment on musical consumption and consumerism.

The Pain Free Found Sound Institute’s website has no link, and no information just more of the aformentioned bad trip artwork. This disc hits it on a number of levels, If you hate breakcore you probably won’t be converted by this, but if you in any way dig it get this disc.
