Psychic Ills – Astral Occurrence (Spring Press)

It’s hard to argue with white vinyl, particularly when said white vinyl consists of these drifting repetitive jams, these psychedelic trip outs, four songs recorded to four track. There’s a simplicity to the hallucinations, bass, drums, guitar, two songs either side that just extend out like they’re flexing their muscles. They toured with the likes of the Melvins and the Buthole Surfers and their music in this 12-inch EP is a kind of relaxed repetitive Krautrock of which Klaus Schultze would be proud. It’s amazing the effect they can conjure with so little ingredients, this NYC band chose to just sit with the music, refusing to progress, just tripping out to their swells. Most of the pieces don’t contain vocals, only a repetitive groove that drum inside your skull and squalling guitars that drift across the horizon. It’s purposely underdeveloped yet that only makes it better, these psychedelic instrumental grooves that just drift outwards, there’s occasional swells of vocals, but very little is made of them, rather the key is the groove which extends like a desert highway. There are only 250 of these babies. It’s not enough.

this record is awesome. Jimy, the keyboard player in this band is keeping the progression together. Klaus Schultze would be very pround indeed.
