Californian electro-crunk / hiphop / post-IDM producer Mochipet (real name David Wang) is certainly a busy and prolific guy, and this latest download-only four track EP release through Automation arrives hot on the heels of his ‘Master P On Atari’ album and ‘Recored’ web package, both released on his own Daly City label. Throughout the four new tracks collected on ‘Cowgirls Gets The Pets’, it’s immediately obvious that it’s in the lower sub-bass frequencies that Yang’s most concerned with wielding. ‘The Dubscrew’ opens this EP on its most laidback, smokers-friendly note and immediately lives up to its title, indeed it smoothly merges the sub-bass crawl of UK dubstep and the narcotised, pitched-down blur of chopped and screwed Southern hiphop, sending bass ripples mushrooming out from the speakers as drum breaks stretch like bursting zippers amidst eerie clanging instrumental samples. By comparison, the hyper cut-up ‘Dirty Rider’ trades in serrated digi-dancehall styles strewn with distorted breakers’ handclap edits and sudden, treacherous DSP dropouts, before ‘Bottom Out’ takes wobbling sheets of Miami-styled sub-bass out over a clattering, stripped-back backbone of rigid electro-breaks rhythms and chugging dark synth riffs, in what’s the most dancefloor-centred offering to be found here. Finally, it’s up to ‘Dubcore’ to bookend things nicely, taking things back out into the crawling dubstep-loaded atmospheres that opened proceedings, whilst also injecting some additional martial snare drum flicker. More strong stuff from Mochipet – you can pay what you want for the download version!
