Max Sipowicz – The Winter In Our Hearts (Self Released)

Melbourne based guitarist and composer Max Sipowicz releases his second solo album through the artist release vehicle Bandcamp. Divided into five parts the album is solely guitar and effects. On first listen it has a semblance of composition, although equally it could be a collection of musings on thematic forms the guitarist has collected, collated and revisited in a day sitting. There is also a strong decomposition element with effects manipulation, predominately delay and reverb, as emphasised aspects of the work. So the sense of sonic decay is played up and the minimal aspects of part one are accompanied by an emphasis on the sustain of notes. Part two encourages this aspect with greater under and overlapping tendencies, a movement towards a form of melodic form, often broken up by short bursts of experimental patterns. Intricate guitar play fills out a highly effected section to the point of dissolution. Part Three concentrates more on guitar play and movements towards thematic integrity can be seen throughout the section with less reliance on effect and more on control and form. Part four is a short and sharp rasping exploration of recurrence more in axe wielder territory. Part five shapes experimental noise scapes and moves the greatest distance from the opening. It holds wavering guitar sustains and distortions and plays with the sonic possibilities of a fluid sound attenuated by effects.
