Peter Kruder – Private Collection No. 1 (G-Stone/Inertia)

Suitably subtitled ‘classics from my living room and bedroom’, this 13 track collection reflects the unsubtle hipster groove that Peter Kruder has cultivated in his work: a slinky sexed up electronic jazz meets bossa nova, downtempo, drum and bass and dub. Although it doesn’t play up to this theme, it provides a more intimate portrait of musical choices for listening spaces than the production work of Kruder has proffered.

Here he reveals influences from 70’s Psychedelic rockers Pierre Moerlen’s Gong’s Adrien, the supremely strange disco trio Stargard’s Three Girls to Tom Waits’ Clap Hands. There’s also the soundtrack music of Bernard Hermann, and a track by Craig Armstrong that is as close to soundtrack as anything else. There is even a close skirmish with intelligent popular music if Talk Talk, Rokia Traore and Jon Brion fit into that category. Of course there is the compulsory artist inclusion with a Peace Orchestra track and a Kruder and Dorfmeister track.

The subtle hint of a darker and more complex background to formation of Kruder’s psyche is revealed, if the selection can be seen as some kind of reflection of character by proxy. If just considered as a selector’s choice it is wide mix of a diverse ear mixed discretely for laidback environments. There is an inclusion of instrumentalist bands as opposed to the electronic/DJ fare you may expect from one of Europe’s more prominent producer/DJs. The mix is not of the journey variety, that would have you move through atmosphere or tempo to a ‘place’, but has brushes with general moods in brief formations and covers wide territory while remaining within the context of the title.
