DOS4GW sounds like some old school programming jargon, one that I’m not up with, not being nerdy enough and all. There is not much info on the guy, even on his myspace, all I can ascertain is he’s from Perth, but has some connection to the growing abstract scene in Melbourne, having played on the same bill as Aoi, whom I have reviewed here previously.
What we have here is a three track sampler, kicking off with ‘Ell’, eminating some seriously heavyweight bass pressure, languishing somewhere between hip hop, dubstep and post-rave mayhem, great production that rolls nicely. ‘Never Again’ gives more of the same, but on the half-step, and reducing the melody to its 8-bit basics. It’s futuristically retro; fans of Disrupt and Zomby take note. ’440′ winds things back into hip hop territory, but keeping the subtle 8-bit influences. The drums are massive, distorted, as is the bass: The Gaslamp Killer would love this stuff, dirty as all hell.
Its great to see new Australian acts really experimenting with sound, the next few years are going to be very fertile. I need more of DOS4GW even if it is just code on my computer. Some vinyl would be nice but I dare say the bass may do some serious damage. Ace.
