Various Artists – Domino Remixes (Domino)

Domino Remixes

This ten track unmixed compilation from Domino gathers together a selection of remixes previously released on the label over the past few years, with several of the reworkings included here being released on CD for the first time. Given the breadth of Domino’s extensive artist roster, you’d expect a diverse range of styles to be tackled here, but in this instance the focus falls upon the more dancefloor friendly end of things, with the collision of electo-house and indie-pop/rock elements of Naum Gaubo’s reworking of Sons And Daughters’ ‘La Lune’ and Alan Braxe & Fred Falke’s Moroder-esque retake of Test Icicles’ ‘What’s Your Damage?’ suggesting that Domino might be eyeing the sort of territory currently occupied by Kitsune. While Pilooski’s peak-time remix of Von Sudenfed’s ‘The Rhinohead’ is likely to have the Modular kids drooling however, there’s still plenty of substance beneath the trendy club stylings here however, with two of Kieran Hebden’s three appearances here providing some of the biggest highlights here. If the late J Dilla’s Guilty Simpson-helmed reworking of Four Tet’s ‘As Serious As Your Life’ represents the one step towards eccentric hiphop here, complete with crazy jazz bass, Hebden’s own reworking of the Archie Bronson Outfit’s ‘Dead Funny’ sees the Outfit’s vaguely Talking Heads-esque nervous punk-funk being taken down a relentless metronomic percussion-strewn techno path, with spectacular results. It’s a trajectory that culminates beautifully with Audion’s minimal techno retake on Hebden & Steve Reid’s ‘People Be Happy/Rhythm Dance’ and Pantha Du Prince’s reworking of Animal Collective’s ‘Peacebone’ – two truly inspired recontextualisations that easily justify their more than ten minute long running time. Well worth investigating.
