Tempa – Time To Run 7″ + CDR (2600 Recordings)

Tempa - Time To Run

2600 Recordings are set to release some absolute gold in 2009, and after teasing us with a great compilation, a stunning mix from Buddy Peace, and podcasts by the likes of Fatty Ghettoblaster (watch this name…), they finally drop this fantastic little lathe cut 7″ release from Tempa.

The Time To Run ep contains some great tracks, packaged with a cdr containing 6 tracks of sampledelic madness. With production sitting comfortably with hip-hop, this is far more than just beat tracks, melding Morricone style soundtracks, jazz instrumentation, funk and psych themes to create a diverse listening experience. Sounding like the lost soundtrack to film noir, the opener Nightfall Manoeuvres lays on the spagetti western theme, shifting to a latin shuffle that is intriguing and playful, before shifting back to the Morricone moods. Fall Back is more straight up funk jazz with a beautiful undercurrent of percussion, flute and vibes alongside solid bass and mellow brass. Rollin’ takes us into wonky soul territory, again, mellow strains soothe the senses. The title track Time To Run has a latin funk flavour with lush synth lines and keys, riding on an upright bass groove. Elevation takes us back to Tempa’s take on the new wonky sound, a new soul with fractured, shuffling beats, sounding as good as anything Flying Lotus has produced. The final track Lost Souls is probably the most hip-hop of all the tracks, reminding me of luminaries such as Madlib and MF Doom, playful, mellow jazz samples from who knows where…

This is a great little ep, so snap it up while you can, you know its not going to last long. Watch this label in 2009, you will hear alot more noise from them. www.2600recordings.com
