Dokkemand – Hons! (Other Electricities)

Hons! certainly is a kooky electronicia album, playful glitchy, broken hip-hop beats, warm synth plonking, ambient sensibility, naïve melodic singing and a glistening tapestry of sounds.

Dokkemund is is Marius Grøtterud Egenes, a Norwegian musician and remixer. Hons is his first full length album and features contributions from featuring contributions by Kate Havnevik, Cranes vocalist Alison Shaw, Laura Becerra from Carrie (Static Discos), Sarah Hellstrom (Lost Room), and Lars Wiik.

The title refers to a curious playful plastic ring game by the name of ‘Honse-ringer’ that Marius’s parents played in the 50’s. (I suppose you had to be there to participate in the joy). However the album captures this childlike playfulness in a sense of naïve simplicity and cherubic singing that does little to disguise it’s clear skill and complexity, it merely enhances the sense of play.

Lupe (featuring Kate Havnevik) is the closest the album comes to a more traditionally structured pop/dance number with clever lyrics manipulated to excellent effect. Mostly the album is a play of tone, manipulated samples, experimental beats and ethereal voice.
