Cheju – Bubble Wrap (Rednetic Recordings)

London-based melodic IDM producer Wil Bolton (aka Cheju) is certainly a busy guy; as well as heading his own Boltfish Recordings label, he’s also previously released a swathe of albums and EPs on labels including Rednetic, Static Caravan and Unlabel whilst also somehow finding time to collaborate with Rednetic labelmate Mint as Biotron Shelf. This latest five track EP as Cheju shows Bolton following a trajectory not dissimilar to the likes of Plaid and Vector Lovers, marrying frequently harsh and treacherous rhythmic breakbeat elements with warm, emotive synth-pad backdrops that provide a calming counterpoint to the meticulously-programmed chaos going on beneath. Unfortunately, in this case it’s the extreme over-familiarity of the musical territory being explored by Bolton here that proves to be the biggest stumbling block when listening to this EP. While sinister, nocturnal moments such as the downright menacing and crunchy ‘Bubble Wrap’ clearly show that Bolton is more than capable of crafting immersive soundscapes, there’s perhaps an overriding sense of a lack of individual flair to grasp onto, resulting in an otherwise strong collection that simply doesn’t really stand out from the hordes of other melodic IDM producers out there.

Hi Thanks for the review, i was just wondering why this is reviewed now, as it was released over a year ago, do you have a massive backlog and will you be reviewing more recent releases. Thanks for reviewing the releases so far. I saw a copy of cyclic defrost in Rough Trade in Covent Garden the other day, it looked good.

Yeah we DO have a massive backlog and releases get sent out to a pool of reviewers periodically from which they can pick and choose.

I’m glad Rough Trade has some copies.

Its difficult to get the current issue overseas because it weighs 250gms with the cover CD this time around!

I’ve got a copy of the new Inigo Kennedy – Transaction album in my review pile as well, so there are definitely newer Rednetic releases working their through the system; look for it to go up on the blog in the next few days.

    evilchris,
I thoroughly enjoyed your review of Boltons latest although didnt understand what you meant by musical territory?
Do you think you got everything out of what Bolton was trying to portray?

or do you think that Boltons just a little out of his depth. i wonder whats going on through his mind sometimes and why he does what bhe does.
Do you think he read your review and do you think he cares, sounds like his passion is dieing, slowly but dieing but he is not dead. I once heard him think what you like of me i dont care anymore sik of it, leave me alone

    Hi Mile,

I guess what I’m referring to by ‘musical territory’ isn’t mood or emotional territory so much as this specific type of post-Plaid & AFX graceful / emotive IDM, which I feel is rapidly approaching a point where it’s been done to death. I really think that because there are so many artists out there doing this similar type of thing, it’s really hard to stand out distinctly amongst the pack unless you’re really doing something fresh. That said, it’s entirely possible that I didn’t get everything Bolton was trying to portray; I’d really like to check out some more of his work, so if you have any particular recommendations, they’re always gratefully received.

    Hi Guys
Its interesting hearing you discuss this. It could be argued that this genre was done to death by Warp artists over 10 years ago. It also can be said of house, d&b etc. If people like the music people will make it and listen. So as an artist from one level i am happy. But the key is this – does what i am making push music forward, does it retain some soul in the electronica realm? How big do these advancements need to be? Some genres evolve very slowly almost unnoticably. Or is it a simple case of taking a warp like tune and bunging the rythem through a glitch plugin?

Personally i prefer to deal with what exists in this genre and get some soul out of it, try to deal with more abstract concepts, rather than attain the latest production techniques.
