Larry Heard / Loose Fingers – Soundtrack from the Duality Double-Play (Track Mode/Stomp)

Larry Heard cd cover

Using the familiar godfather terminology, Larry Heard (aka Mr Fingers/Fingers Inc) would best be described as the godfather of both deep house and acid house. His tracks ‘Mystery of Love’, ‘Can You Feel It’ and ‘Washing Machine’ from the mid-80′s were hugely influential in the formation in these styles. He has never rested on his laurels or grandstanded, on the contrary he has continued to release interesting music to the present day, staying true to his original principles.

This album is divided into two parts, the first 8 tracks being in a deep soulful house style, while the latter 8 are a return to his acid house style. Heard’s percussion doesn’t break any new technological ground that would appeal to the chinstrokers, being a simple padded 4-4 house beat with great bass lines that possesses a real groove. Over this he places soft synthesiser tones and washes, an occasional sweet saxophone or guitar melody, topped off with his very soulful vocals. The themes are about love, change and nature. This is sexy music you could play on a Sunday morning, or while making love. This would also go down well in a club of open minded music lovers who actually like to dance, but unfortunately these days such a scene barely seems to exist.

In times of a hundred fractured styles and musical ‘developments’, this is refreshingly honest music by a true master.

I’ve always dug Larry Heard’s songs, as that’s what they are, real songs. The ability to combine heartfelt lyrics with great house music has always been his strength and you’re right, over the years he’s never tried to reinvent the wheel, just made top notch 12″s and albums. He does however, seem to announce his retirement from music on an annual basis. A good publicity stunt or an obsession with music that keeps him coming back? Who cares, as long as he keeps delivering those dreamy pads and great piano lines, I ain’t complaining.
