Auntie Flo – Theory Of Flo Remixes 01 (Highlife)

Glaswegian electronic producer Brian D’Souza’s debut album under his Auntie Flo alias ‘Theory Of Flo’ proved to be one of last year’s leftfield dancefloor delights, and now this latest 12” EP offers up the first three of what D’Souza promises to be a series of remixes of tracks taken from that album. In this case, rather than sourcing remixes from bigger names, D’Souza’s instead drawn upon the talents of close friends and labelmates for the three tracks collected here. On the A-side, fellow Glaswegian producer The Revenge adopts a sympathetic and delicate approach to his remix of ‘Waiting For A (Woman)’, sending Anbuley’s original vocal floating against sparse slow techno kickdrums, airy synth trails and lightly ebbing electronics, the brooding bass undertones introducing a slight undercurrent of building darkness as the rhythms glide effortlessly through the airy sense of space.

Highlife labelmate Cain’s reworking of ‘Hewal3’ meanwhile sees tumbling tribal polyrhythms and traditional African vocal samples interlocking into tight, vaguely grime-centred patterns as eerie massed backing harmonies and bendy analogue synths add an unsettling feel, shortly before things tumble into Jarre-esque bright arpeggiated synths. It’s Mehmet Aslan’s closing remix of ‘Cape Malay Prayer’ though that easily offered up my favourite reworking here, sending a sinister bouncing Italo-house arpeggiated synth riff prowling against stomping house rhythms, as colourful looped motifs slowly unfurl into the foreground, only to be slowly overtaken by maniacally buzzing analogue synths. It’s slightly crazed and unhinged, and easily the most fun offering to be found amidst this consistently engaging selection of remixes.
