Planetary Assault Systems

Since reigniting his Planetary Assault Systems alias back in 2008 (arguably the moniker under which he’s left his most influential mark upon the techno scene), UK-based electronic producer Luke Slater pretty much hasn’t stood still, with a steady stream of 12” releases on Ostgun Ton and his own Mote-Evolver label. Dark and hypnotic is perhaps the best description for the overriding aesthetic that pervades this latest 12” EP ‘The Eyes Themselves’, which sees Slater offering up three distinctly dark hued new tracks.

‘The Eyes Themselves’ opens proceedings with a relentlessly throbbing 4/4 kickdrum pulse gradually being overtaken by eerie refracted sounding timbres before rattling hi-hats lock into sharp focus, the entire track powering off into a wash of gritty textures and seemingly airless momentum. By contrast ‘Strange Attractor’ gets more spooky and spacious as synthetic bleeps cycle against metallic-sounding percussion, clicking snares and a crisp 4/4 kickdrum pulse, the addition of steely hi-hat volleys adding to the vaguely Dopplereffekt-esque atmospheres, before ‘Arc’ closes this EP off with with a rattling breakneck glide through relentless buzzing synth sequences, shaker accents and shuffling tecxhno rhythms that’s easily the grittiest sounding moment here. Techno heads of a dark minded persuasion should be suitably thrilled by what’s on offer here from the ever-reliable Luke Slater.
