Paper/Upper/Cuts – Illa Killa Yellow Space (Boomarm Nation)

0

Paper/Upper/Cuts aka David “Papi” Fimbres serves up nine cuts of explorative ancient and future musics on Illa Killa Yellow Space. The accomplished percussionist and instrumentalist draws from all colours of his musical palette, painting a picture of infectious worldly grooves, and chilled out dubbed up tracks.

Opening with flute and a steady kick, before being joined by steel drums and stabs of synth, “Glacial Palms’ sees Papi go straight into chilled out dub-like poolside party vibe, without the schtik. Gamelan-sounding percussion chimes away in the background.
Moving into a two step with matching native rap on “Pura’, Papi makes it clear that he isn’ to be closed into any one genre alone. Tribal percussion and melodian turn things conga line-esk on “Traditional Uprise’ as synths stab and swing, popping back and forth in unrestrained glee. “Los Dichos’ sees more two step action, timbales pop and roll in the background as synth picks out a simple beat for the mc to toast over. Things turn club like on “Thumb Blox’, with a thumping beat hold it down as swirls of reversed sounds sway over the top.

Flipping the record over, and we’re back in chillout land on “El Ranchero Tejano’. A lone squelching synth carries the melody as interchanging beat samples cut back and forth underneath. “Jump the Streets of Madrid’ sees things get seriouly dub like mid way through, breaking down into a half time swaggering beat as sparkling synths glitter and glide atop before picking back up to it’s party speed origins. “Slowercase Letters/GLP’ keeps the vibes high, synth buzzing and swirling above a straight 4 beat. Before long, an all-out percussion jam takes over, feeling for all purposes like the start of a street party. Closing the album is Gull’ remix of “Glacial Palms’, who give the track a classic club-dub workover, proper. Each sound is twisted and turned and worked into a futuristic version of itself, rolled together into a short but sweet closer.

There’ nothing like a good looking album, and pressed on rather striking marble yellow wax with equally impressive cover art, this album has all the neccessary trimmings. Fans of worldly grooves will be right at home here.
