Peon – Intercourse Suite (Bandcamp)

Peon describe themselves as ‘Melbourne’s premier double-drummer festival of exploratory sound’, and who’s to disagree? On the evidence of Intercourse Suite, the duo (Sam Price drums, electronics, and Ronny Ferella drums, melodica, ngoni and effects)’s third album, they’re deserving of more renown than that sticky claim can promise, as they mine an understated current of shuffly post-rock fizz, like lowercase improv unafraid of groove.

This approach broadly recalls The Necks, as does the title, but there’s less chamber respectability, more haphazard grit. Ferella’s ngoni is foregrounded effectively on ‘1’ among portentous cymbal splashes, the melodica on the brief sketch of ‘2’. ‘4’ shows them stretched to a 14 minute slow boiler, where rhythmic elements slowly coalesce around digital chirrups and aqueous synth gurgle, and while this is interestingly explored I find the shorter experiments of ‘2’ and ‘3’ more satisfying, like Miles Davis’s miniatures ‘Little Church’ and ‘Nem Um Talvez’ of Live Evil.
